Women Artists Respond
To the World Conference On Women
The exhibition, Beijing and Beyond includes 60 international artists in a traveling exhibition consisting of two formats to enable broad distribution of these works of art, created in response to artists participation in the Fourth World Conference on Women, 1995. One format includes the original artwork, all 12" x 12" or smaller. The other exhibition format consists of color copies (CC) of the originals.
In the fall of 1995, the largest gathering of women in the history of the world occurred at the NGO Forum '95 of the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women in Huairou, China. Sixteen thousand governmental representatives and thirty thousand women representing NGO'S (non-governmental organizations) attended these two gatherings. The national Women's Caucus for Art (WCA), the oldest multidisiplinary women's art organization in the United States, was represented by a delegation of one hundred women artists, art activists, and arts educators. The delegation, including international representatives, presented thirteen panels, performances, exhibitions and workshops. These exchanges of creative expression by women demonstrated that the arts are an integral component in the movement to further the recognition of women's rights as human rights.
In BEIJING AND BEYOND: Women Artists Respond to the World Conference on Women, international women artists who went to China share their visions and memories of this historic event and call to action. These works reflect our experiences and our determination to communicate the messages proclaimed at the conference. Our goal is to share and expand the important connections we made in this global community of women and to continue the effort to create a world where all women and girls are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.
